Art

Elementary Art

Beginning in 1st grade, class meets weekly for a semester to give a foundation in drawing and color. The elementary art program is also available after school in a fully equipped art lab for interested 1st-6th graders. This program is a great way to introduce your child to fine art at an early age and to shape his or her development in art appreciation through a variety of both two and three-dimensional mediums in a relaxed and fun environment.

Junior High Art

Beginning in junior high, art is taught as an academic discipline. The 7th-8th grade art classes are taught two to three times per week during school and provide a foundation in drawing, color, painting, three-dimensional skills and art history.

High School Art

The High School program is divided into five different levels.

Art I: Freshmen only with no prerequisite

Art I introduces students to the elements and principles of design that are used in the art making process. The students will explore art history, art criticism, and a variety of 2D and 3D mediums which include but are not limited to drawing, painting, collage, and printmaking.

Art II: Sophomores only with no prerequisite

Art II focuses on the fundamentals of drawing which is essential to building and creating more advanced works of art.   The students will explore art history, art criticism, and a variety of dry mediums which include but are not limited to pencils, charcoal, colored pencils, conte crayon, and pastels.

Art III: Juniors only with Art I and Art II as prerequisites

Art III is an advanced level class focusing on an in depth study of art history and the fundamentals of painting. The students will explore art history, art criticism and a variety of advanced mediums which include but are not limited to oil painting, watercolor, acrylic, and pastels. The Art III students assist with setting up the art show.

Art IV: Seniors only with Art III as prerequisite

Art IV is an advanced technique class that allows each student to use the skills learned in previous classes as a platform to create more individualized works of art. The students are challenged with different themes and new mediums in each project, which require students to research, document, and write about the work that they are creating. Majority of the class time is devoted to artmaking, but students will also explore areas of art history, art criticism, and careers in art. The Art IV students will be responsible for setting up the mid-year show in the fall and the end-of-year art show in the spring. They will also have their own dedicated space for all of their work completed at HCA.

Art Survey: For seniors only

Art Survey is a class that is tailored for seniors that may or may not have taken an art class before. The students will study an overview of all areas of art which include art history, art making, art criticism and careers in art, and will explore the elements and principles of art with the fundamentals of drawing and painting. The Art Survey students participate with setting up the mid-year and end-of-the-year art shows.
